Renewal Requirements

Iowa electrical board regulations state that most electricians must renew their licenses every three years by December 31st. All renewal applicants must earn 18 hours of continuing education credits (CE) to do so.

The CE hours must include the following:

  • Six (6) hours studying the latest National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • 12 hours of approved related electrical material or additional NEC courses

The State of Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) accepts CE credit from approved education providers like JADE Learning.

Note: For licenses that are less than three years old, the amount of CE needed is pro-rated according to the year the license was issued. Check the DIAL website to confirm how many hours you may need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work while my electrical license is pending renewal?

You cannot legally work on electrical projects requiring licensure until your renewal is approved and the state issues your new license.

What if my license expired?

Electricians with expired licenses may still renew them within three months of the expiration date. However, there is an additional late fee of ten percent for each month past that date.

All holders of licenses that have expired for more than three months need to reapply for a new license.

Does Iowa have reciprocal license agreements?

Iowa has reciprocity with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

To qualify for reciprocity, an applicant must:

  • Pass a state-sponsored exam
  • Hold a qualifying license for one year
  • Have not already taken the Iowa exam and failed
  • Meet additional state licensure requirements
