Why Use Exam Prep?

JADE Learning's Texas electrical exam prep is built around one goal: getting you ready to ace the PSI exam. Every module and practice question is aligned to the 2023 NEC and the specific topics the state tests you on. That way, your study time is focused on what actually matters.

Every question uses the same multiple-choice format as the actual exam, so the experience is familiar on test day. You can take the practice tests as many times as you like, so you can be confident you know the topics inside and out.

Requirements

The TDLR issues two individual license levels that require a proctored PSI assessment: Journeyman and Master. Each has different experience requirements and a different structure.

JADE Learning has resources that are designed to support both of these.

Journeyman Electrician

This license allows you to work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician.

To qualify, you must complete at least 8,000 hours of documented on-the-job training as an apprentice. You may apply to test after 7,000 hours, but your license will not be issued until you document the full 8,000. Once approved by TDLR, you can schedule through PSI.

The Journeyman exam consists of a code knowledge section and a calculations section, with a total of 80 multiple-choice questions and a four-hour testing window. Both sections require a score of 70% or higher to pass.

Master Electrician

This is the highest individual credential in Texas. It allows you to install, maintain and extend wiring systems, and is required to supervise Journeyman licensees and obtain permits.

To qualify, you must hold a Journeyman license for at least two years and document a total of 12,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training. Once TDLR approves your application, you can schedule your test through PSI.

The Master exam is also split into two sections: NEC Knowledge and Calculations. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions with a five-hour testing window. Both sections have a 70% minimum passing score.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule my test?

After TDLR approves your application, you will receive an email confirming your eligibility. Visit test-takers.psiexams.com or call PSI at (833) 333-4741 to schedule. Your name must match your government-issued ID exactly as it appears in your TDLR records.

Is the Texas electrician exam open-book?

Yes. You can bring your own soft-cover copy of the 2023 NEC to the PSI center. Bookmarks and highlighting are permitted. Loose papers, unauthorized notes, and personal electronic devices are not allowed.

What topics appear most frequently on the test?

Questions commonly cover the NEC, electrical theory, calculations, branch circuits, wiring methods, grounding and bonding, service sizing, and state-specific licensing rules.

How do I know if I passed?

You will be given your grade at the examination center once you have finished. PSI will directly report the scores to TDLR, which they then post on their website.

What happens if I fail a section?

You retake only the section you failed. You must pay the $78 retake fee. You do not need to retake a section you already passed.

Do JADE Learning courses cover both license levels?

Yes. Both the Comprehensive Exam Prep Package and the Simulated Practice Tests cover the full range of topics tested on both exams.
