The Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) exam requirements help make sure that every person submitting a license application has a practical understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), the Revised Code of Washington (RCW), and the Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
Other important details include:
General Journey-Level Electricians may perform all types of electrical and telecommunications installations.
They cannot register for their exam until they complete the education and work experience requirements of a registered electrical apprenticeship.
Master-Level licensees can perform all journey-level work as well as supervise other electricians to make sure that their work complies with all applicable laws and rules.
Applicants need at least four (4) years of experience as a certified general electrician to qualify.
Administrators also ensure that electricians follow the laws but have no prerequisites because they are not certified to perform any electrical work themselves.
You are allowed to bring print copies of any original, copyrighted material, including code books, into the test center with you. However, any books you bring cannot be written in. Only highlighting, underlining, or permanent subject tabs are allowed.
Although the exams are open book, you are still expected to have a working grasp of all relevant codes and general math and electrical theory computation.
Don't waste valuable time on test day searching through books for a specific answer or concept. Use our training resources to build and reinforce the knowledge required to pass on your first try.
If you struggle with information retention or experience test day anxiety, try using some of these methods in addition to our resources:
