Requirements

The state of California has two types of electrician licenses: Electrical Contractor (C-10) and General Electrician Certification. Each one has different qualifications and testing requirements.

At JADE Learning, we offer resources that are designed to support both pathways.

Electrical Contractors

The C-10 license is regulated by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB).

Businesses or individuals seeking a contractor license (including C-10) must complete two exams: one related to the specific trade category and one about business and law. Our Business and Law Prep guides you through one of the required contractor portions.

Note: Not all electricians need a C-10 license.

Certified Electricians

The electrician certification and exam requirements are regulated by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) and its curriculum committee.

Anyone who makes connections of greater than 100-volt amps and works for a C-10 contractor must pass one exam to become a certified electrician. C-10 licensees do not need to be certified.

Those pursuing a general certification can use two proven resources to help them prepare: simulated practice tests and a comprehensive study guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs to take an electrician test?

Businesses or individuals seeking a contractor license (including C-10) from the CSLB must complete two exams: one related to the specific trade category and one about business and law. Not all electricians need a C-10 license.

Anyone who makes connections of greater than 100-volt amps and works for a C-10 contractor must pass only one test to become a certified electrician. C-10 licensees do not need to be certified.

How do I register?

The state uses PSI, a third-party testing provider, to administer its assessments. Once the applicable state licensing board approves your completed application, you must contact PSI to schedule an appointment. You can register online or by calling (888) 818-5831. You'll need to provide your driver's license number when you use online scheduling.

What is the process like?

All PSI assessments are taken on a computer at designated testing sites. This video explains what to expect when you arrive.

Our simulated practice tests mirror PSI's testing environment, so you can become familiar with the format.

What topics are covered?

Both the C-10 and Business and Law tests are closed-book and utilize multiple-choice questions. You will receive specific details from PSI regarding test length and time limit when you schedule your appointment.

The C-10 portion is divided into five sections:

  1. Planning and Estimating
  2. Rough Wiring
  3. Finish Wiring and Trim
  4. Startup, Troubleshooting, and Maintenance
  5. Safety

The Business and Law section includes these seven sections:

  1. Business Organization and Licensing
  2. Business Finances
  3. Employment Requirements
  4. Insurance and Liens
  5. Contract Requirements and Execution
  6. Public Works
  7. Safety

Once you pass, CSLB will mail you additional instructions. If you fail, you can reschedule with PSI after 21 calendar days.

Because the test content is highly structured, targeted studying can be a major advantage. Our Business and Law Exam Prep provides clear, in-depth instruction on the core subjects covered by the CSLB exam, helping you build the knowledge and confidence needed to pass on your first try.

What can I expect during the test?

The California general electrician exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and has a 4.5-hour time limit.

The questions cover the following topics:

  • Electrical Safety
  • Determination of Electrical System Requirements
  • Installation
  • Maintenance and Repair

It's an open-book test, but you can only reference the materials provided by PSI at your designated testing center.

When you pass with a score of 70% or more, you will receive your certification card in the mail within two weeks. If you don't pass, you must wait 60 days before taking it again using a new application form.
