Renewal Requirements

Electricians in Maine need to renew their licenses every two years on the issue date.

Part of the renewal process includes completing electrical continuing education courses (CE) during each code cycle to keep a license in good standing.

The state licensing board selects 15-hour training programs that review the changes made in the latest adopted version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).

Remember, not all CE options are created equal. Unless you use an Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation-approved education provider like JADE Learning, your credits won't count.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I renew an electrical license online, and what does it cost?

In 2024, the Electricians' Examining Board (Board) adopted an online renewal portal that all licensees must use. Access to the portal opens about 60 days prior to your license expiration date.

Before starting, make sure you have the following:

  • Your full license number with the two or three-letter prefix.
  • An access code. If you don't know it, you must contact your regulator.

Then, select the Renew a License option, provide the necessary information, and follow the on-screen instructions.

You may pay the $150 renewal fee using a valid credit or debit card. Electricians over the age of 70 receive Senior licenses and only need to pay $20 to renew.

Does Maine accept electrical licenses from different states?

You can apply for reciprocity if you have an active license from one of the states listed, passed an initial licensing exam, and worked as an electrician for at least six years.

Journeymen licenses are accepted from:

  • New Hampshire
  • Oregon
  • Idaho
  • North Dakota
  • Vermont

Master electricians from the following states can apply for reciprocity:

  • New Hampshire
  • Vermont

To apply, visit the online portal and select Apply for a License. Then, choose your license and apply via the Reciprocity/Endorsement option.

Can I renew an expired license?

A license that has been expired for less than 90 days requires an additional $50 late fee when renewing. After 90 years, the penalty fee increases to $100.

After two years, you may need to request a hearing at a scheduled Board meeting to determine eligibility. The Board may reinstate the license after payment of all applicable licensee and late renewal fees.

After 10 years, you need to reapply using the initial license application method.

How will I get my new license?

The Board does not provide printed copies of licenses. Instead, you will get yours via the email address you provided on your application and can print it yourself.

The state encourages users to mark all emails from noreply@maine.gov as safe to prevent licenses from being accidentally lost in junk or spam folders.

While waiting, you can check your application status by searching for your name as it appears on your application on the state's licensing website. If your application is accepted, the status will show Pending.

How do I look up the status of an electrical license?

You can verify the status of any licensed electrician by following these steps:

  • Visit the ALMS Online License Search
  • Enter the individual's name or license number
  • Review the license status, expiration date, and any disciplinary actions.

Do I need to report course hours to the state?

According to the Board, documentation proving that you completed the required 15 hours of CE is not required. However, they warn that you may be audited and required to submit supporting documentation. That is why we provide certificates of completion with the course package.
