Continuing Education Requirements

According to the state licensing board, electricians in Massachusetts must earn 21 hours of continuing education (CE) credits every three years by July 31 to renew their licenses.

Of the total hours, 15 must cover Massachusetts Electrical Code updates, while the other six are professional development electives. Access to a copy of the latest National Electrical Code (NEC) is also required.

The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians (Board) only accepts CE credit from approved education providers like JADE Learning. We offer courses for Class A (Master) and Class B (Journeyman) licenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a license renewal deadline?

Yes. Master and Journeyman electricians must renew by July 31 every three years.

Apprentices must renew their ID cards annually based on the issuance date. However, they do not need to complete CE.

Do I need to report my electrician education hours?

JADE Learning reports your completed course hours to the Board on your behalf. We do recommend keeping a record of your completed CE in the event of an audit.

What's the license renewal process?

Electricians must renew online using the Division of Occupational Licensure's (DOL) e-PLACE Portal on mass.gov. Licensees with existing accounts can start renewing as early as April 12. First-time users can create an account here.

To complete your renewal application online, you will need your Record ID and authorization codes, which are shown on the renewal notice. You can also find them using this search tool.

Once logged in, follow these steps:

  1. Select "Manage Licenses, Permits, and Certificates"
  2. In the right column next to your license, select the "Renew" link
  3. Enter your information and select “Continue”

After finishing this process and paying the license renewal fee, your expiration date should be updated within 24 to 48 hours.

If that doesn't happen, contact the Board:

Email: electricians.board@mass.gov

Phone: (617) 701-8786

How much does it cost to renew?

Renewal fees are different for each license type.

  • Master Electricians: $117
  • Journeyman Electrician & Systems Technicians: $78

When will I get my new license card?

It can take four to six weeks to receive your new license card in the mail. During that time, customers can use the DOL's Check a License database to verify your license.

Does MA offer license reciprocity?

Yes, the Board accepts Journeyman and Master licenses from New Hampshire if they were obtained by passing an exam in NH.
