The California Building Standards Commission voted to adopt the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC). The adopted codes were published on July 1, 2019, and became effective on January 1, 2020. With the adoption of the new code, there are now new requirements for the California Electrical Certification Continuing Education and California Electrical Certification Exam.
California Electrical Certification Continuing Education
For electricians that are already certified and need to renew their license, the requirements remain the same. Electricians must complete 32 hours of continuing education every 3 years and the renewal date depends on the date of issue. Electricians can now complete continuing education on topics related to the 2017 National Electrical Code.

Test takers will be allotted 3 hours and 30 minutes to answer 80 questions. 6% of the test will cover safety, 22% will cover Determination of Electrical System Requirements.
