JADE Learning Offers Updated Electrical Exam Prep and CE for the California Building Standards Commission’s 2017 NEC Adoption

The California Building Standards Commission voted to adopt the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC). The adopted codes were published on July 1, 2019, and became effective on January 1, 2020. With the adoption of the new code, there are now new requirements for the California Electrical Certification Continuing Education and California Electrical Certification Exam.

California Electrical Certification Continuing Education

For electricians that are already certified and need to renew their license, the requirements remain the same. Electricians must complete 32 hours of continuing education every 3 years and the renewal date depends on the date of issue. Electricians can now complete continuing education on topics related to the 2017 National Electrical Code.

California Electrical Certification Exam

In response to the new code adoption, those aspiring to test for their California Electrical Certification can also expect some changes this year. The electrical certification exam will now be based on the 2017 National Electrical Code. The test will follow the same format with updated questions on the new code. Test takers will be allotted 3 hours and 30 minutes to answer 80 questions. 6% of the test will cover safety, 22% will cover Determination of Electrical System Requirements. Installation will take up the bulk of the test with 66%. The remaining 6% will cover Maintenance and Repair.
