Step 1 – Create an Account on Massachusetts’ ACA ePLACE

The state of Massachusetts has gone online – this means you will be renewing your electrical license online.  In order to have an easy renewal when July comes around, you will want to first Register an Account on the ePLACE portal.

When you’re ready to register an account, visit the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ePLACE PortalYou will have to create a username and password on the ePLACE portal registration page. Make sure to write down your username and password so you have them handy!

Once you have registered an account, you will be notified with the following message: “Congratulations.  You have successfully created an account with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ePLACE.  You will receive a confirmation by email.”

Next, you need to link this Portal account to your license record.

Step 2 – Link Your ePLACE Portal Account to Your License Record

Login to your ePlace account and click on the Home tab.  Under the menu, you will see a header that says “What would you like to do?”  Under it, you will see a link to link your account to your license.  Select “Link Your License/Permit/Certificate to your portal account” and then click “Continue” at the bottom of the page.

Link License to Account
  1. Select Division of Professional License (DPL) from the drop-down menu of agencies
  2. Enter your Record ID and the Authorization Code (your Record ID is your license number, but the authorization code comes from the state – email  to receive your code)
  3. Select the “Continue” button
  4. On the next page, review the information for accuracy and hit “Continue”
  5. Once you get the “Successfully Submitted” page, you have linked your license.  Note – this needs to be done for each license, so if you have more than one, you will have to go through this process more than once.

Once your license record is linked to your portal, you will see your license listed under the “Manage Licenses, Permits & Certificates” tab.

Step 3 – When Does My Massachusetts Electrical License Expire?

Massachusetts electrical licenses expire every 3 years on July 31st. Massachusetts electrical licenses will expire on July 31, 2019. In order to continue working and keep an active electrical license, you must complete continuing education hours and report them before the expiration date.

To get started on your continuing education hours and qualify to renew your license, visit our Massachusetts Continuing Education page.

Step 4 – Complete Massachusetts Electrical Continuing Education

Massachusetts Master and Journeyman electricians are required to complete 21 hours of continuing education every 3 years (15 must be approved MCE hours.  The other 6 hours can be professional development.)

JADE Learning offers online courses that enable you to meet your 21-hours of continuing education requirements for only $199.  JADE Learning is approved by the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians and has been a trusted provider since 2017 (Provider #444). Our courses are taught by licensed electricians and NEC code experts with decades of electrical experience. Once your courses are completed and paid, you’ll receive your completion certificates in PDF format in a confirmation email.  We will report your hours to the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians 1-2 business days after your course is completed. Our rush reporting feature means JADE Learning reports hours to the state every business day – and multiple times per day close to the 7/31 renewal deadline.

Step 5 – Renew My Massachusetts Electrical License:

Lastly, you will need to renew your electrical license online and pay your renewal fee. Be sure to start your electrical continuing education early and submit your renewal application on time to avoid any late fees or fines.  Login to the ACA ePLACE public portal. (Make sure you have already linked your license to your portal account – otherwise you will need to go to Step 1 and do that now)

When you login and are on the Manage Licenses tab, look to the right of your license number and click on “Renew” and not “Amendment” (unless you need to make changes). Verify your contact information, answer the required questions, verify you have completed your CE, and pay online with a credit card, debit card, electronic check, or ePay.  Note, this fee is paid to the state and is independent of the cost of completing continuing education hours.

    1. Not at this time. We are not yet approved as a provider of electrical continuing education in Rhode Island, but we are working on it and hope to have courses for both next renewal cycle.
