Becoming a certified Class A, I, III or IV Water Supply, Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment or Wastewater Collection operator in the state of Ohio requires both passing a state operator certification exam and achieving an appropriate level of hands-on work experience.
You must have a high school diploma or equivalent to apply for the exam along with the minimum amount of operating experience needed for each certification level. You may still be approved for the exam without the appropriate amount of operating experience.

How to Renew Your Ohio Water License Online
Ohio Water and Wastewater Operators must complete between 8 and 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years in order to renew their Ohio water certification. At least 50% of the hours must be dedicated to Operations and Maintenance (O&M).
- Wastewater Treatment Class A, Water Supply Class A = 8 contact hours
- Wastewater Treatment Class 1, Water Supply Class 1, Wastewater Collection 1 & 2, Water Distribution 1 & 2 = 12 contact hours
- Wastewater Treatment Class 2, 3, 4, Water Supply Class 2, 3, 4 = 24 contact hours
License renewal deadline is December 31st every two years.
