Water and wastewater operators serve their neighbors by protecting public health. It is extremely important that people receive clean, potable water and that wastewater be discharged in an environmentally safe manner. Water operators are certified by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). There are minimum educational and experience requirements depending on the various certification grade levels. All levels now require a high school or GED diploma, training courses and on-the-job experience.

How to Renew Your New York Drinking Water Operator License
New York Drinking Water Operators are required to complete 1.5 - 3 CEUs (15-30 hours) for renewal every three years, depending on license type.
- License Renewal Deadline: Staggered, every three years.
- IA and IIA = 3.0 CEUs (30 hrs). IA and IIA licenses require 5 hrs from laboratory course. The remaining hours can be fulfilled by courses covering science of water, source water protection, mathematics, treatment, operation & maintenance, regulations, and safety.
- IB and IIB = 3.0 CEUs (30 hrs). The hours can be fulfilled by courses covering science of water, source water protection, mathematics, treatment, operation & maintenance, regulations, and safety.
- C = 1.5 CEUs (15 hrs). The hours can be fulfilled by courses covering science of water, source water protection, mathematics, treatment, operation & maintenance, distribution systems, regulations, and safety.
- D = 1.5 CEUs (15 hrs). The hours can be fulfilled by courses covering mathematics, operation & maintenance, distribution systems, regulations, and safety.
