In Montana, all drinking water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, or water distribution systems must be operated under the supervision of a fully certified operator to ensure the proper management, operation, and maintenance of the system. DEQ administers both the water and wastewater operator certification programs and provides testing and program information services to ensure comprehensive, ongoing training is provided to Montana’s water and wastewater operator community.
Certificates are issued for the following categories: Water Distribution System Operator Class 1A-4A, Water Treatment System operator Class 1B-4B, Wastewater System Operator Class 1C-3C, Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator Class 1D-4D, and On-site Wastewater System Operator Class 2E-4E

How to Renew Your Montana Water/Wastewater Operator License
Wastewater workers, drinking water treatment workers, and water distribution system workers all require Montana water operator certification. DEQ administers both the water and wastewater operator certification programs and provides testing and program information services to ensure comprehensive training is provided to Montana’s water and wastewater operator community. Once a water treatment certification is acquired, it must be renewed on a bi-annual basis. JADE Learning offers expert-designed online courses to make renewal easier. - Continuing Education Deadline: May 31st, every even year
- Class 1 WATER operators (either or both water distribution or treatment) = 2.0 CECs (20 hours)
- Class 1 WASTEWATER operators (either or both municipal or industrial wastewater) = 2.0 CECs (20 hours)
- Class 2, 3 or 4 WATER operators (either or both water distribution or treatment) = 1.0 CECs (10 hours)
- Class 2, 3 or 4 WASTEWATER operators (either or both municipal or industrial wastewater) = 1.0 CECs (10 hours)
- Class 5 WATER operators (either or both water distribution or treatment) = 0.4 CECs (4 hours)
