The proper operation and maintenance of drinking water treatment systems is vital to public health and is trusted to those with Illinois drinking water certifications. The Drinking Water Operator Certification Program is operated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. There are four classifications of water operator licenses based on the type of water treatment facility being managed:

Class A – Facilities that include coagulation/sedimentation, lime softening, UV disinfection, pathogen removal/inactivation, and/or membrane filtration.

Class B - Facilities that include aeration and filtration (other than membrane filtration) and/or ion exchange.

Class C - Facilities that utilize chemical feed only.

Class D - Facilities that are limited to pumpage, storage, or distribution.

How to Renew an Illinois Drinking Water Certification

Drinking Water Operators in Illinois must complete 15-30 hours of continuing education every three years in order to renew their license. The deadline for renewal is July 1st every three years, based on original licensure year.

  • Class A and Class B operators must complete 30 hours with a minimum of 20 hours related to the technical aspects of water treatment and distribution and a maximum of 10 hours related to professional responsibilities or safety.
  • Class C and Class D operators must complete 15 hours with a minimum of 10 hours related to technical aspects of water treatment and distribution and no more than 5 hours dedicated to professional responsibilities or safety.
